  2. The following is an eight part bulletin flooded on the packet network
  3. by KA9YLV@KA9YLV.IN.USA.NA and is presented here.

  6. NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS A SERVICE...
  7.  
  8. ...of the National Oceanic and Atmosperic administration (NOAA) of the U.S.
  9. Department of Commerce. As the "Voice of the National Weather Service," it
  10. provides continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information directly
  11. from National Weather Service offices. Taped weather messages are repeated
  12. every four to six minutes and are routinely revised every one to three
  13. hours, or more frequently if needed. Most of the stations operate 24 hours
  14. daily.
  15.    During severe weather, National Weather Service forecasters can
  16. interrupt the routine weather broadcasts and substitute special warning
  17. messages. The forecasters can also activate specially designed warning
  18. receivers. Such receivers either sound an alarm indicating that an
  19. emergency exists, alerting the listener to turn the receiver up to an
  20. audible volume; or, when operated in a muted mode, are automatically turned
  21. on so that the warning message is heard. "Warning alarm" receivers are
  22. especially valuable for schools, hospitals, public-safety agencies, and
  23. news media offices.
  24.    Under a January 1975 White House policy statement, NOAA Weather Radio
  25. was designated the sole Government-operated radio system to provide direct
  26. warnings into private homes for natural disasters and nuclear attack. This
  27. capability is to supplement warnings by sirens and by commercial radio and
  28. TV.
  29.    The Broadcasts are tailored to weather information needs of people
  30. of people within the receiving area. For example, stations along the
  31. seacoasts and Great Lakes provide weather information for boaters, fishers,
  32. and others engaged in marine activities as well as general weather
  33. information.
  34.    NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts are made on one of seven high-band FM
  35. frequencies ranging from 162.40 to 162.55 megahertz (MHz). These
  36. frequencies are not found on the average home radio now in use. However,
  37. a number of radio manufactures offer special weather radios to operate on
  38. these frequencies, with or without the emergency warning alarm. Also there
  39. are now many radios on the market which offer the standard AM/FM
  40. frequencies plus the so called "weather band" as an added feature.
  41.    The National Weather Service operates about 380 stations. Approximately
  42. 90 percent of the Nation's population is within listening range of a NOAA
  43. Weather Radio broadcast.
  44.    A similar network of about 15 stations using the same frequencies
  45. broadcasts continuous weather information across much of southern Canada.
